This is my first review of a band that sings in Finnish. Gonna be totally exciting experience for me as a language learner and music lover. Joining those two features allow both study and enjoy and to my mind it's the only way to get the desired result. Hopefully, I'll be able to write a review in Finnish really soon (fingers crossed).
I listen to many bands that sing in Finnish and have to say it sounds more natural in all kinds of music made in Finland. Especially it comes to modern metal where namely the magic of Finnish language adds up about of 60% of mightiness. Now, let's change for the band.
I'm familiar with Suden Hetki music since February this year and since listen to their records pretty frequently. My top favorite song is Äitimaa released in winter and in summer the band has also filmed the music video for that one. Releasing Äitimaa was turning point for the band to stand out of majority and demonstrate their music full of melancholy and power. The combination of male and female vocals accompanied with mesmarizing gloomy shades of heavy metal will definetely open many doors for Suden Hetki.

I would like to take into account the band's new release called Surunsyömä today. As for me, this song proves the statement that Suden Hetki has all chances to go higher and get more response as up and coming band.
Now let's turn to the song itself. The orchestrations sound is pretty tranquil and silent and it feels like preraring for something wide and massive to start. With that peaceful beginning the first that came to my mind is Within Temptation and their remarkable way to make catchy orchestral intros. As the female vocals come first in Surunsyömä, the way the band made the intro is natural and I can only express my admiration to the composers.
As I was saying female vocals start dominating the song adding up to the calm start. I must say how natural they sound emphisized by firm and heavy guitar that reminds me of Nightwish guitar sound. Another feature of making the beginning so undisturbed is drums sound in a bit dreamy and thoughtful way. There's only kick and toms that come in nice way to be the basement of the melancholy of the song. And finally there's an element that has disturbed the peaceful atmosphere of Surunsyömä and enlivened the guitar riff - there's male vocals arrived! The song mood gor rapidly replaced with some depressiveness and shades of exitement. From the first glance it might seem weired combination but those feelings are exactly what I feel fere.
Another time the vocals are replaced and female ones keep supporting the intro idea but this time the drums are louder and more intensive, now changed with overheads section. The both vocals keep changing, nicely complimenting each other. They are both powerful and with the guitar sound on the background the whole composition makes totally intoxicating effect on me. That's what I adore in Finnish music - its enormous liveliness, power and naturalness.
Surunsyömä chorus is true hit one. The male vocal is captivating here and must say really strong. Guitar riff on the background is something I can't get off listening. The band uses 7 string guitar what makes big difference to classic 6 string variant. Using 7 string guitar allows to make your sound heavier and more powerful, especially when play 7th string open. That's another great feature as for Suden Hetki music and so as for Surunsyömä.
After chorus ends there comes gripping keys bridge that's rapidly replaced with male vocals and female ones as backing. How do they sound together, I just can't get enough...
Guitar solo makes me remember of Nightwish for the second time already and now the way guitar comes in is true Nightwish way of entering the solo. Yeah, I really like that and how it dominates the whole sound with emphasized and fashinating melody it creates. Soon after the solo the male vocal changes to be more slow and thoughtful while the guitar keeps playing the same heavy riff and it sounds just intoxicating once again. The last chorus was made to pay more attention to the band's both vocalists and other intruments stay behind the sound field. Yeah, they work out perfectly. The way how the song ends truly makes me wanna listen to that once again, the scream in the end and that heavy and firm guitar is someting that makes my brain blow up. That was a killer one...
Now as always in my review I should mention lower range intstruments. The drums are recorded and mixed professionally in Surunsyömä that's why the basement of the song was kept strong for the entire single. Choosing the instrument that highlights drums the most I'd choose guitar because 7 string one is able to almost the same effect as bass. The band managed to built really strong basement for the song and this time both kinds of guitars drive it. I also hear totally amazing drums sound but in my opinion it could be a bit more dynamic, especially in the chorus part. I must notice, the chorus is so bright part here, it's remarkable and captures so much. The beauty of Finnish language empasizes it even more and that is the point that makes shiver down my spine every time I put this mighty song on repeat.
Suden Hetki can surprise! I strongly believe for the next songs to be released and watch how the band develops inside their genre.
Thanks for reading! Ja kiitoksia musiikkista, Suden Hetki!
